16 July 2018 — The stealthy Tempest jet fighter will include autonomous capabilities, enabling it to fly either with a drone or with a pilot on board. The jet will may enter service as early as 2035 as an eventual replacement for the Eurofighter Typhoon.

It will be built by Team Tempest, a consortium including BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo, and MBDA. Asked if the UK can afford the jets, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson replied: “If the RAF is to have the capability to keep Britain safe and make sure we can defeat our adversaries at home and abroad, we need to be making this investment in a fighter jet.”

The UK will invest 2 billion pounds in the project, which Williamson described as “the future of combat air”, adding: “Tempest is going to be a future jet fighter that will take the RAF to an ever greater height.”
